My fifty-year engineering career often kept me from as much woodworking as I would like. I built one home and remodeled another, crafting all the millwork and doors. In my St. Paul shop I enjoy building and finishing Arts & Crafts style furniture. My first solo piece from a middle school shop class, a black ash book holder, displays reference books in my shop.
Inspiration for Turning
In 2018 my wife Sandy and I enrolled in an introductory wood turning class at North House Folk School. Later a master class with Lou Pignolet exposed me to live edge turning. That valuable instruction from a gifted teacher launched a quest to liberate the beauty internal to logs, stumps, and branches, and the joy of turning live edge, gnarly wood with voids and burls. We built a shop in Grand Marais focused on turning and hand tool woodworking.
